A tool can only help when we remember to use it.
That sounds obvious. But I have plenty of things that I bought with the best intentions and then put somewhere "safe" — which sometimes means I barely see them again.
Recently, someone gave me a very simple suggestion for Kavanah Pouch:
Keep it in your tallis bag.
The more I thought about it, the more sense it made.
Every morning, there is already a routine.
You open your tallis bag.
You take out your tallis.
You take out your tefillin.
And if the Kavanah Pouch is sitting there with them, you have a simple physical reminder to put your phone away before you begin davening.
There is no new app to open.
No notification to schedule.
No habit tracker to check.
The reminder is simply there.

Making the Pouch Part of the Routine
Kavanah Pouch was created because I wanted a practical way to deal with a very modern distraction during davening.
A phone can be on silent and still pull at our attention.
It can be face down and still be in the corner of our mind.
The pouch creates a physical separation.
Keeping it with your tallis and tefillin adds another piece to that idea: it makes the pouch easier to remember.
The routine becomes very simple.
Take out the tallis.
Take out the tefillin.
Put the phone in the pouch.
Daven.
A Small Habit
I do not think every challenge needs a complicated solution.
Sometimes a small change in where we keep something can change whether we actually use it.
That is why I liked this suggestion so much.
The best Kavanah Pouch is not the one sitting in a drawer at home.
It is the one that is there when you are getting ready to daven.
And perhaps the simplest place for it is right next to your tallis and tefillin.
